Mahler 4 – the completion of the cycle

The Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra and Mahler go together extremely well; since the beginning of 2000, the BPO has performed more symphonies by Mahler than any other composer. 

Our performances of Mahler’s 4th Symphony in March 2017 represents the completion of a cycle which started in 1990; our Music Director, Michael Lloyd has now conducted all of the symphonies that Mahler completed with the BPO.  It’s also taken 41 years of waiting for three of our current players to perform Mahler 4 again with the BPO; Tony Smith, David Arrowsmith and Tricia Moore all took part in our last performance of the work in 1976.

The BPO programmed Mahler for the first time in 1971 with Mahler’s 1st  Symphony and  Mahler’s symphonic works have been a mainstay of BPO concerts over the last 46 years:

Symphony No. 1 – 8 performances; first performance in 1971; most recent performance in 2014

Symphony No. 2 – 4 performances; first performance in 1981; most recent performance in 2008

Symphony No. 3 – 1 performance in 2014

Symphony No. 4 – 2 performances; first performance in 1976; most recent performance in 1976

Symphony No. 5 – 6 performances; first performance in 1974; most recent performance in 2000

Symphony No. 6 – 7 performances; first performance in 1979; most recent performance in 2011

Symphony No. 7 – 2 performances; first performance in 1999; most recent performance in 1999

Symphony No. 8 – 4 performances; first performance in 1984; most recent performance in 2016
