Mahler 8 in 1984

Mahler’s Eighth Symphony is a major undertaking for any orchestra, let alone a non-professional one, but the concert in Symphony Hall on 6 March isn’t the first time that BPO have tackled this enormous work. In 1984, to mark the 25th anniversary of our then Music Director, Kenneth Page, the eorchestra gave three performances – at Birmingham University, in Coventry Cathedral and in the Royal Albert Hall in London to an audience of over 4,000.

Preparation’s for the event were covered by BBC Midlands Today in this special programme. Apologies for the quality of the recording, which was taken from an old VHS tape – we will try to find a better version.
