Tim Stidwill – Horn Concerto No 1, R Strauss

Tim started playing the horn at the age of 11 and was initially taught by Richard Duckett. Through his years at secondary school, Tim progressed through the Birmingham Schools’ Orchestras and was also a member of the Academy of St Philips.

Tim’s time at University should have been spent learning all about Civil Engineering, but he often spent more time performing music rather than studying! Tim was a Music Scholar at the University of Warwick and he performed Schumann’s Konzertstück for Four Horns and Orchestra with the University Orchestra at the end of his first year – he performed the work again a year later with the Birmingham Schools’ Symphony Orchestra.

After University, Tim moved to the South East of England playing for such groups as the Kensington Philharmonic Orchestra, the Salomon Orchestra, the Hertfordshire Philharmonic Orchestra and the English Brass Group. Following Tim’s returned to the Midlands in 2000, he has been a regular performer with numerous ensembles in the Midlands including the Sinfonia of Birmingham, the Chandos Orchestra, the Midland Sinfonia, the Orchestra of St John and Holborne Brass – he is the Principal Horn of the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra. Tim’s recent solo performances have included Schumann’s Konzertstück for Four Horns and Orchestra with the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra, the York Bowen Horn Concerto with the Sinfonia of Birmingham and the Britten Serenade with the Leamington Chamber Orchestra and The Orchestra of St John.

Away from music, Tim is a chartered Civil & Structural Engineer
