I joined the BPO around 1985, initially as the Orchestra Pianist

Started Playing
I started Piano when I was 5 years old and Clarinet when I was 7.

Musical training
Piano with Joyce Mildren, Clarinet with David Sharpe and later Organ with Ron Lowe. I never studied at the Music College, but I did have private lessons with Joyce Woodhead at the Conservatoire

Chartered Civil Engineer with Hyder Consulting – an international consultancy specialising in engineering and environmental management. They have been superb in supporting my musical interests.

Other orchestras
I’ve played in many midlands orchestras – Sinfonia of Birmingham, Junction 10, Warwickshire Symphony Orchestra, Beauchamp Symphonietta, Chandos

Other activities
A committed railway enthusiast, owning a house by the Lickey Incline in Bromsgrove which we have named after the famous banking engine – Big Bertha

Favourite composer
Many favourites, but I suppose the greatest has to be Mozart

Favourite music
Stravinsky’s Firebird and Strauss’s Alpine Symphony have moved me the most in the past.

Wife Cathy (violin), Charlotte (Violin, Clarinet and Piano), Emily (Violin, Flute and Piano) and Ben (Cello and piano)

Any pets ?
Goldfish, Scampi and Chips and a loopy hamster called Fluffy (he’s only got one head though! (ref Harry Potter)

Anything else ?
Not much room for more, except to say that I try to link my work to music wherever I can.
