Fingals Cave, the inspiration for Mendelssohn's Overture

Yesterday’s final concert of our first series for this season, in our regular home base at Birmingham University’s Elgar Concert Hall after excursions to Sudbury and Cleobury Mortimer, drew a large crowd to hear a programme of classic and romantic works from Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Richard Strauss. Writing on the Birmingham Post website, Christopher Morley praised soloist Tim Stidwill‘s “kaleidoscopic” command of tone and dynamics in Strauss’s First Horn Concerto, supported by “wonderful woodwind articulation” from flautists John Franklin and Karen Collet.

In Beethoven’s notoriously difficult 7th Symphony, Michel Lloyd “drew a performance of raw vitality from his willing players”, and “the whole response to this fabulous piece was gratefully alert and alive to its irresistible energy.
