Concerto Prize Finalist Chu-Yu Yang

Chu-Yu Yang was born in Taiwan and started playing the violin at the age of 6. He decided to learn music professionally during his time at high school, and was fully supported by his parents. Under the guidance of his previous teacher Su-Lan Hsu, Chu-Yu has improved speedily and has gained a wealth of musical experience. During his second year in Kaohsiung Junior High School, he was selected to be the concertmaster of the school string orchestra. He was the winner of National Taiwan Music Competition for both solo performance and chamber music.

In 2014, he was offered a place at the Birmingham Conservatoire with a full scholarship and the Leverhulme Arts Scholarship in the following year. He was the leader of the Symphony Orchestra of Birmingham Conservatoire and joined the CBSO Youth orchestra in 2015. His chamber music group was awarded the Sylvia Cleaver Prize in 2016. He is now under the tutelage of Simon Smith and participated in masterclasses by Tasmin Little, Tamsin Waley-Cohen, Bin Huang and Jennifer Pike.
